tommaso iadicicco's photofolio – Making Photos Not Just Taking Them

Photojournalism as an approach to wedding photography

- But Tom, what is photojournalism?
- Well, basically what newspaper photographers do.
- Mmm. You mean those pictures of war children, street riots, favelas? Ehm… What does it have to do with my wedding?

Good question. The question all clients ask me (and rightly so).
Ok. Before I start boring you with art styles, philosophies and technical explanations, I’ll ask you to look at the following pictures:

This is NOT photojournalism.

This IS photojournalism.

Got the difference?

Wedding photojournalism, or documentary photography, will tend to capture events as they unfold with minimal interference on the part of the photographer. The aim is telling the story of that day, following the natural flow of action.

You won’t have an intrusive stage director stopping the events, shouting orders, asking you to stand, pose, smile, do this, do that. You’ll have a ‘candid camera’ instead.

Your wedding day should be about you… and I try to ensure it gets captured just that way. I don’t run the show. I don’t stand in front of your mum when you’re cutting the cake.

Don’t panic now! That photojournalistic flair is an integration to my overall approach to a wedding, it will enrich it and make the end result more valuable and enjoyable, but is not the one. You will still have traditional-style family pictures and gracefully staged portraits. Just check here for evidence!
